Final trip post :)

Overview
Adam and I are on our flight back to the good ol' US of A and wanted to recap our trip with some of our favorite experiences and some not so favorite :) This has been the best two weeks of our lives together and we are so glad that we took the time to journal everything in our blog so that we can always remember the details. Here are a few more...

Sarah's Recap:
Favorite overall City... Venice because it was so quaint and peaceful. I loved the food and the people we met on our visit. It was so nice after a day of hustle and bustle to walk through the silent streets at night.
Most Cultured City... Barcelona... not necessarily a good thing... we had a lot of cultured experiences on the streets between vendors, performers and men determined to sell us marijuana.
Favorite Hotel... Hotel Casa Camper in Barcelona because of the extra amenities... the snack bar, roof top terrace, umbrellas, bikes, the huge maps in the lobby so that we could get acquainted with the city, the two rooms (bedroom and lounge) and the overall feeling of the hotel.
Favorite Meal... Dinner in Venice the second night when we met our French friends. This was a very authentic Italian meal and Adam and I really enjoyed every course. We felt a real connection with the French couple we met at dinner. They were very sweet and very interested in learning more about the American culture and sharing theirs with us. At the end of the meal we received an open ended invitation to Normandy anytime we want to visit.
Favorite Dessert... Crapes in Venice with Nutella and bananas. MMM!!!
Favorite Train ride... From Milan to Cinque Terra when we met Bob and Olga. If we wouldn't have been seated in the same cabin with them on the train we wouldn't have met them and had the opportunity to enjoy their company in Cinque Terre.
Favorite friends we met along the way...  Bob and Olga. I hope we are able to stay in touch.
Favorite Tour... The Coliseum tour, we were able to see the  inside of the Coliseum and then tour The Roman Forum. Although we didn't get to complete the entire tour because of a few slow people in our group, it was a very informative tour and something we wouldn't have been able to do by ourselves.
Favorite Excursion... The hike in Cinque Terre. It was very challenging but also SO beautiful and rewarding it made me feel a real sense of accomplishment.
Favorite Museum... Prado. Even though it was my second time visiting the museum, it was really neat renting the headsets and going through with Adam to see the history. I noticed so much more this time around and really enjoyed sharing the experience.
Favorite item purchased... Painting in Venice. My parents gave us Christmas money to purchase a painting because they knew how badly I wanted to purchase one on our trip. We found the perfect painting for our fireplace. Adam asked me what I liked most about the painting... the actual painting or getting to meet the artist... I don't know if I can answer that question. It is extremely special to me that we will have a piece of art in our home for many years and I was able to meet the man that created the beautiful piece of work!
Favorite part of the trip... Being in Sevilla and visiting my old friends. Seeing the people at the Tech campus and also Jose at the river. We had a very relaxing time in Sevilla and it was a perfect conclusion to our trip. The cherry on top was seeing my friend Peter from high school for dinner our last night. We had a great time!! Sevilla will always have a special place in my heart!
Worst Hotel... Venice! Which was our most expensive hotel. It was a ripoff! The hotel itself was nice until you laid down on the bed... Adam and I both agreed that sleeping on the floor may have been a better choice. We felt taken advantage of because of the price we paid for the quality. When you are on a trip like the one we just took it is imperative to have a nice bed to sleep in. We only had a few hours each night and our bodies were sore and needed rest! We didn't get it there!!
Worst Meal... Lunch our first day in Venice when we ordered the "special toast" that cost an arm and leg. It was our most expensive lunch of the trip. We learned a valuable lesson that day... never stray away from the Rick Steve's book or a recommendation from the hotel.
Worst Experience... The train from Venice to Milan when we got in trouble with the train attendant. It is now ok to laugh about the situation... until now it still hurt my feelings to think about it. I am just grateful that God gave me tears at the right time. I firmly believe that we would have had to pay the €100 if I had not cried... haha... but I do admit the real reason for the tears was because I was scared and upset. Not gonna lie!

Adam's Recap:
Favorite overall City... Venice. It has a certain charm that I'm certain no other place in the world has. Walking the narrow streets and alleys with no cars is the perfect getaway.
Most Cultured City... Rome. I'm not sure about the most cultured but it definitely has the most history. It was intriguing to imagine the people that walked some of the same areas as us but a couple thousand years ago. Barcelona for the most cultured.
Favorite Hotel... Barcelona. This hotel was very modern which is not a common theme while traveling in Europe. The complimentary food and drinks available 24 hours a day made it my favorite.
Favorite Meal... One of our dinners in Barcelona, it was also our most expensive of the trip but worth every Euro. Our two appetizers were bursting with flavor and the paella was also fantastic.
Favorite Dessert... We didn't eat dessert regularly but I did get 4-5 gelato's during the course of the trip. My favorite flavor is stracciatella which is pretty much chocolate chip.
Favorite Train ride... Our first train of the trip, from Rome to Venice. It was the nicest train and we were able to sleep most of the way.
Favorite friends we met along the way... Bob and Olga were great, we really enjoyed our time with them in Cinque Terre. The connection we made with our French friends at dinner in Venice was also very strong.
Favorite Tour... The Coliseum and Roman ruins. There is just so much history.
Favorite Excursion... The Cinque Terre hike. The views were incredible from above each village and it was great to be outdoors and get some great exercise.
Favorite Museum... The Vatican museum tour but I also really liked the Prado.
Favorite item purchased...We brought very little back. Other than the painting I did get two t-shirts. I really like the painting especially because of how much it means to Sarah.
Favorite part of the trip... The entire thing. I'll forever treasure these two weeks and wouldn't have changed any of it.
Worst Hotel... Venice. The hotel was very nice as all of them were but the bed was so uncomfortable that there is no other choice for this category.
Worst Meal... Our first meal in Venice which was lunch. We deviated from the Rick Steve's book on this one which we did a number of times but all the others were very good. This particular meal was way overpriced for below average food.
Worst Experience... Our second train ride, from Venice to Milan. Getting yelled at by the Italian train ticket guy was no fun, especially because we had already paid in full for our tickets. I will long remember him yelling "50 Euro!, 50 Euro!, 50 Euro!, 50 Euro! while moving his index finger back and forth from me to Sarah.

Third day in Sevilla

Last night was a late night for us so we slept until we woke up without an alarm. That has been the greatest part of Sevilla... no alarm clocks!!! When we woke up we had two chocolate muffins that we had stolen from tea time yesterday :) It was a great breakfast! We got ready just in time for lunch... although is seems like we are being lazy and sleeping while in Sevilla, we are trying to relax and get some rest before heading back to the states. We have had late nights and are enjoying not being on a tight time frame.
We made our way over to the market where all of the locals and restaurants purchase their fish, meats and produce. It was really cool. I especially liked it because we didn't make it to the market in Barcelona (because it was closed on Sunday, the only morning we were there) so this made up for it a bit :) We had a tough time finding it but once we got there it was very neat. I purchased an orange and a large bundle of grapes for a €1.59... and they were all great!  We also stayed and had a light lunch at a little restaurant in the market.
After enjoying the market we walked around Sevilla a bit longer and made our way to the Cathedral where we toured around a bit. This Cathedral is the worlds largest Gothic church and the third largest Cathedral in Europe behind Saint Peter's in Rome and Saint Paul's in London. I had been inside when I was here last but it was still neat to see it again. I showed Adam the tomb of Christopher Columbus and he thought that was pretty cool :) We also went up the bell tower and got a wonderful panoramic view of Sevilla!!! We were able to point out all the places we had seen and Adam took tons of pictures! The breeze was wonderful and we really enjoyed the view. I hit a boiling point with "foreigners" because the tourists here are so RUDE... they step in front of you and push you around. Today I had a lady sit on my foot... clearly I was standing on a step looking out at a beautiful view of the city and she decided to sit right where I was standing... Adam and I have decided that we are going to raise our children with Southern values and manners no matter where we end up. It seems like a simple no brainer for us but it is clear that not everyone values manners!!!
We exited the Cathedral right in front of the Irish Pub Flaherty's where I spent many nights in Sevilla. Adam and I went in for one Heineken and enjoyed the people speaking English!!!!
After posting a few updates on Facebook the past few weeks, I got a message from an old High School friend of mine that is in the Military and is stationed 45 minutes South of Sevilla. Adam and I asked him if he could come up for dinner one night and he said yes!!! So we waited at the hotel durning Tea Time to meet up with him. He and his flight partner Mark came up for the evening and spent a few hours with us. They got to Spain last weekend and had not yet been to Sevilla so it was a great little trip for them. They got to partake in Tea Time with us and had a water and snack. When they told us they hadn't been to Sevilla, Adam and I knew we wanted to take them to the river. We hadn't been there yet today and I wanted to say good-bye to my friend Jose so it worked out perfectly! We sat by the river and had a few drinks before heading to a restaurant that Jose recommended for some Tapas. Peter had not tried Spanish food yet so we thought it was good for him to have a few Tapas to get him aquatinted. The guys said their food was very bad on base at the "chow hall" so they were looking forward to a nice dinner. After Tapas we went back to the Italian restaurant that we ate at last night. We gave them several choices for dinner and they chose Italian. It was very good!!!
After dinner we said good-bye to the guys as they had to catch a train at 11pm to head back to the base. It was so great seeing Peter! We realized it has been several years since we had seen each other! Hope we stay in touch!
Tomorrow morning our taxi comes at 5:30am to head to the Sevilla Airport! We have mixed feelings about traveling home. We are ready to be back in the states but are so sad that our trip is over. We have had a great time and are always going to treasure the memories from these two weeks! This trip has exceeded all of the expectations we had. We are so grateful that we were able to experience this together and hope to come back!!

Second day in Sevilla

This morning we slept in and had a lazy morning. I walked a few blocks to the Starbucks to get a Venti coffee for myself, fresh squeezed orange juice for Sarah, and a couple blueberry muffins. It was a beautiful day in Sevilla but also our hottest of the trip with highs in the mid 80's. Sarah spent most of her morning battling the People magazine app on the IPad. She desperately wants a couple issues for the flight home but has been experiencing major downloading issues.
Texas Tech has a new Sevilla campus they moved to the semester after Sarah studied here. When she was here they occupied a building at Pablo de Olivade University but are now on the second story of a building you would never guess was a school. It is a complete different experience for the students that study here now because it is not on a college campus. We had trouble finding it and failed to write down the address before we left the hotel. We were going by a dot we jotted down on the map and I had recalled the address number 44. It was about a 15 minute walk and we knew we were close but couldn't find it. So we went into a Farmacia and asked in Spanish where the American University was. The pharmacist who spoke no English pointed us across the street to an unmarked door and said "Ahh, Douglas Ingles" who is the coordinator of the Sevilla campus. We pressed the button by the door and were buzzed in. As we walked up the stairs Sarah immediately recognized the woman that greeted us at the top, Sarah Pink. She was a faculty member while Sarah studied here in 2005 and recalled Sarah's name, Sarah.... Bienek? she asked. They were preparing for 200 students to come in this afternoon for the summer program and they were very busy. She gave us a tour of the facilities and they reminisced of the group of just 30 that was here back in 2005.
From there we walked to the apartment Sarah lived in even though we had just learned that her 'house mom', Pica, no longer lives there. Just down the street is a pizza restaurant Sarah used to go to, Sloppy Joe's. They have renovated it since she used to go there but the pizza was the same. It was much more like the pizza we are used to in the states with thicker crust, not the thin pizza we ate in Italy. It really filled us up.
I realized yesterday while looking through my bag that I was going to be one pair of skivvies short. I tried to reason with Sarah that I could re-wear a lightly used pair but she shut down that idea immediately. So after lunch we walked to El Corte Ingles, a Spanish department store, where I bought a single pair. Sevilla lacks the must see sights that the other cities we've been in have but there are a few. One of them is Plaza de Espana. We took a short cab ride from the store to Plaza de Espana which is a large crescent shaped plaza with a fountain in the center. The perimeter is lined with a manmade canal with row boats and it is a nice place to spend some time and take some nice pictures. Then we walked back to the hotel and along the way Sarah showed me some HUGE trees that have been here since the days of Columbus. He left from Sevilla in 1492 when he set sail to discover America.
We spent a couple hours in the room relaxing and then downstairs for tea time and some blog writing. Relaxing by the river with a drink is perhaps Sarah's (and mine) favorite pastime in Sevilla, so that's exactly what we did next. Then we set out for a portion of town we had not been to. It made Sevilla no longer seem like such a small city to me. This portion of town had a ton of shopping, nightlife, and the small streets were crowded with people. This area seemed like a smaller version of Madrid and Barcelona.
Now that we've been in Spain for a week we've tired of tapas and fried food. We asked our hotel concierge if there was any good Italian food in the area. He pointed across the street to a place that he said was one of the best in Sevilla. I had spaghetti in an egg sauce with shrimp and bacon while Sarah ordered one of her favorite pizzas that we had while in Venice, ricotta and spinach. It was very good but just not the same as the one in Italy.
While Sarah was studying here they used to go to a place called La Carpinteria. It is a bar that also has a flamenco dancing show. The scene has changed significantly since she was here. She remembers it being all Spaniards but tonight it was all tourists, some of which were rowdy and quite annoying. We arrived just before 11:00pm and ordered a liter of Sangria. Right at 11:00 the flamenco show started. It consisted of one man playing the guitar and singing, one man clapping, and one flamenco dancer. She danced vigorously and the show only lasted 20 minutes, any longer and she would have completely sweated through her dress. The show was short but we didn't mind because we were ready to get to bed as tomorrow is our final day.
Luego.

First day in Sevilla

Today we travelled to Sevilla. We rode the AVE again and it was VERY fast. This time we got up to 300 km/h. Adam and I just look at each other in awe because neither of us have been on land traveling this fast. We had a wonderful breakfast and watched a movie on the iPad which ended just in time to view the scenery between Cordoba and Sevilla. Beautiful land!!
Once arriving in Sevilla we took a Taxi to our hotel and got situated before hitting the streets. I wanted to show Adam the hotel that I had my orientation when I got to Sevilla  six years ago :) We made our way over after getting a bit lost :) OOPS!!! I had to get my bearings before knowing the streets. It has been awhile. So we walked over to Fernando 111 to take a few pictures. Then I took Adam to the bar across the street where I had my first Cruzcampo!! We had a beer and some olives and of course took a few pictures! I'm so lucky that Adam has interest in doing the olden days tour with me. We then took a little walk over to La Carpenteria to show Adam where we would be going for Sangria and Flaminco dancing!!! WOW it felt like old times. Just like yesterday that I was living here.
After reminiscing a little it was time for lunch so we made our way back to the Cathedral to enjoy some Tapas for lunch at a cute little place that had lots of fried fish. I had told Adam many times that the food in Sevilla was not my favorite because it all seemed to be fried and this was a perfect example! Although it was very good... it was very hard eating like that for four months... so I'm glad its only three days this time.
I couldn't wait to take Adam to the River, this is where I spent many afternoons soaking in the sun and drinking Tinto Veranos :) When we walked up to the hut to order a few drinks... Jose was there!! The same man that we were all friends with many years ago. He didn't recognize me at first and then I told him who I was and it was like old times. He came over and sat with us for a little bit to ask about all of my classmates. I am the first one to come back and visit. Well... besides that one that I found out came back to run the Texas Tech campus in Sevilla. We plan on going over to the school tomorrow to say hi and also promised Jose that we would come back and visit tomorrow.
We were tired from walking around and it is VERY hot in Sevilla this week so we decided to rest a bit. We went back to the hotel to enjoy "tea time" with drinks, fruit and sandwiches at the hotel. I could tell Adam enjoyed the coffee as he had THREE in about an hours time. This hotel does not include breakfast but does have tea time... we find that a little strange :) None the less we enjoyed it.
While up in the hotel room we both fell asleep and slept for about four hours. We are both fighting a cold and are getting worn down... so when our bodies sleep for four hours we let them. We woke up around 10:30 and headed out for dinner. When we left our hotel room it was like it was 7pm in the states... people everywhere enjoying drinks and tapas with friends. It is amazing how life is so much later in Europe. We had dinner at a place down the street from the hotel and were very satisfied... NOTHING FRIED!!! I really wanted a salad but settled for fresh cut up tomatoes with basil... MMMM! It was wonderful! Then we took a long stroll around the cathedral before heading back to the hotel.
When we got back to the hotel we found out there had been a few earthquakes in Southern Spain today. We wanted to let everyone know that although these were relatively close to where were are, we were not effected. We are in Southwest Spain and the earthquakes were in Southeast... looks to be about 5 or 6 hour from here.
Love to all!! Night night!
